M018--Doctor Doom

Real Name: Victor Von Doom
First Appearance: The Fantastic Four #5 (July 1962)

Among the nations in which SHIELD has deemed a potential threat to western political power is the small and seemingly unassuming eastern European nation known as Latveria.  Ruled by technological genius dictator Victor Von Doom who usurped the throne in an astonishingly fast campaign of violence, he turned the backwater country into a thriving technological powerhouse, though the free will of its citizens is greatly questioned by the world at large.  He's openly opposed to the United States, especially its premiere Fantastic Four, and several terrorist attacks in the states have been blamed on those directly connected to Doom, but the precarious nature of the political state in Latveria and the nearby countries and Latveria's own development of massive weapons of mass destruction make any action against the state impossible.

There's also the issue of Doom's past in America that few are aware of--Doom was, in years past, a student of the Future Foundation and a classmate of Reed Richards.  Doom was apparently a brilliant but reckless student, and when Richards pointed out a flaw in one of his more dangerous experiments that Doom refused to acknowledge the experiment backfired, causing great damage to the Baxter Building and scarring Doom's face.  When Doom claimed the experiment was tampered with by Richards, the Future Foundation's star pupil, he was expelled by the foundation to protect their integrity.  Richards suspects that it was this moment that led to the creation of the brutal dictator as he exists today.

I mean really, all I wrote was that he's basically Doctor Doom as you imagine him.  He has no superpowers but is host to a plethora of technology.  And maybe he's a sorcerer too--though magic is much more of a hushed secret in my canon.

So this guy--the first villain for this project really had to be Doctor Doom, right?  I felt that Doom aught to look more like a proper dictator, and I found tsbranch's amazing rendition of him (aftasardem.deviantart.com/art/…) that this design is very much inspired by, though I worked to have more traditional Doom influence in, with the hood and cape and everything.  Conceptually I'm thinking he's wearing his battlesuit underneath his clothes, and he's got his right sleeve rolled up to show you his suit so you know he means business.

He's another character that appeared in my Amazing Spider Friends picture, though I modified him quite a bit since then (primarily his mask).
