Description
project: DINOSAURIA
specimen 073
EUHELOPUS ZDANSKYI
"Otto Zdansky's True Marsh Foot"
Romer, 1956 (originally Helopus Wiman, 1929)
Length: 15m (50ft)
Weight: 15 tonnes (16.5 tons)
Location: Shandong, China
Era: Aptian age, lower Cretaceous (112 million years ago)
Classification:
Dinosauria
Saurischia
Sauropodomorpha
Plateosauria
Massopoda
Anchisauria
Sauropoda
Neosauropoda
Macronaria
Titanosauriformes
Somphospondyli
Euhelopidae
Notes:
Originally named Helopus ("Marsh Foot") by Wiman in 1929, it was later realized that this name was already taken by a type of bird. Romer renamed it Euhelopus ("True Marsh Foot") in 1956--however, it is interesting to note that this too was already in use by a type of grass, but the rules that dictate naming allow for a name to be reused provided the two are not of the same biological kingdom, so Euhelopus is allowed to remain the name of this animal.
