Description
project: DINOSAURIA
specimen 003
KENTROSAURUS AETHIOPICUS
"African Pointed Lizard"
Hennig, 1915
Length: 4.5m (15ft)
Weight: 450kg (1000lb.)
Location: Tendaguru Formation, Tanzania
Era: Kimmeridgian age, upper Jurassic (155 million years ago)
Classification:
Dinosauria
Ornithischia
Thyreophora
Thyreophoroidea
Stegosauria
Stegosauridae
Stegosaurinae
Notes:
Kentrosaurus technically "shares" its name with the horned dinosaur Centrosaurus. Though they are both spelled and pronounced differently, they both use the same root word (kentron, meaning pointed in Greek).
Synonyms:
Doryphorosaurus aethiopicus Nopcsa, 1916
Kentrurosaurus aethiopicus Hennig, 1916
UPDATE MARCH 12, 2013:
As this was one of the earliest ones I did, a lot of the processes that went into creating the dinosaurs for the project hadn't yet been implemented, and my anatomy and coloring greatly improved over the course of the year. So, while I felt the underlying picture was anatomically robust enough to not have to completely redraw, I felt a more full scale revamp of the underlying drawing could help as well as a new color scheme (based loosely on the original) could help bring one of my favorite dinosaurs up to standard with the better later drawings.
